There was a book in the St Louis public library that I read 40 years ago. The title as I recall was “The Book of the Springfield Rifle”. In any case, the book described such an experiment using 1903 Springfield rifles firing vertically from a small boat in the middle of a shallow lake. One interesting observation was that bullets that remained stable would return sooner & at higher velocities than bullets that tumbled on return.
I watched this on YouTube yesterday.(5/6/18) 1 minute 50 seconds and you could hear a couple of the bullets hit the ground. He used API ammo.
