ROCHESTER, NY — A suspected home invasion early Sunday morning on Emerson Street ended in a fatal shooting when a resident acted to protect his family from intruders. Police identified the deceased as 22-year-old Zhymar Thacker, who was found inside the home around 5:25 a.m.
According to the Rochester Police Department, Thacker and multiple accomplices broke into the residence, which was occupied by two adults and five children—ranging in age from 7 months to 13 years. The family, having moved in just one day earlier, had been sleeping together in a second-floor room.
Awakened by the sounds of the break-in, an adult male resident quickly retrieved a handgun from another upstairs room. As Thacker ascended the stairs, a shootout ensued between him and the resident. Thacker was fatally shot during the exchange, while the resident sustained a gunshot wound. He was treated at a local hospital for non-life-threatening injuries and has since been released.
Authorities have stated that the use of deadly force in this instance appears justified, and no charges are expected against the resident in connection to Thacker’s death. The investigation remains ongoing, and no arrests have been made related to other individuals involved in the break-in.
Police encourage anyone with additional information or video of the incident to contact the Rochester Police Department through the provided channels.
This incident underscores the importance of preparation in home defense scenarios . Acting quickly and decisively, the resident was able to protect himself and his family from imminent harm. Homeowners should ensure they understand local firearm laws and practice safe, responsible gun ownership.
