RUSKIN, FL — A home burglary turned deadly in the early hours of November 10, when an armed suspect was fatally shot after breaking into a residence on the 3000 block of Double D Ranch Trail.
According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, deputies received an emergency call at 12:23 a.m., reporting a break-in in progress. When deputies arrived, they found the suspect deceased from multiple gunshot wounds. The homeowner’s adult son, who was in the residence at the time of the intrusion, reportedly confronted and fired at the suspect to protect himself and other family members present.
Detectives have confirmed that the suspect was armed and that the break-in posed an imminent threat to the occupants. Sheriff Chad Chronister addressed the incident, acknowledging the intense fear that such a situation can cause for residents and emphasizing the shock and trauma often experienced by families in these situations.
“This is every homeowner’s greatest fear, a dangerous and brazen individual breaking in, showing a complete disregard for the safety and security of others,” Chronister said. “Our thoughts are with this family as they recover from the trauma of this event.”
The incident remains under active investigation, and further updates will be provided by the Public Affairs Office as they become available.
Home break-ins can happen quickly and unexpectedly, especially at night. Thankfully, in this case, the son owned a firearm and was able to defend himself and his family from the threat. For those who choose to keep a firearm in the home, it is essential to practice safe storage and have a well-thought-out plan in place for emergencies. Staying calm, securing loved ones, and contacting law enforcement are crucial steps to managing a home intrusion safely and effectively.
