CRISP COUNTY, GA — A carjacking attempt on Highway 280 West turned violent on August 7, 2024, when a road construction worker shot the assailant in self-defense. The incident occurred around 10:20 a.m. near the intersection of Crossroad Store Road.
The situation began when 40-year-old Calvin Williams Jr. of Albany, Georgia, stopped his grey Dodge Charger behind a road construction truck. Williams exited his vehicle and aggressively confronted the road workers, threatening to kill them. During the confrontation, he assaulted one of the workers with a piece of rebar and attempted to steal the construction truck.
Fearing for his life and the safety of his colleagues, another worker on the scene retrieved a firearm and shot Williams, wounding him. Williams was later found to be involved in a hit-and-run incident in Sumter County earlier that day.
A Sumter County Sheriff’s Deputy, returning from court, was flagged down and assisted in managing the situation. Crisp County Sheriff’s Deputies, along with Crisp County Fire Rescue, Crisp County EMS, and the Georgia State Patrol, also responded to the scene. Williams was stabilized and airlifted to a hospital for treatment.
During the investigation, authorities discovered a bag of suspected marijuana and cocaine inside Williams’ vehicle. He now faces several charges, including three counts of hijacking a motor vehicle, two counts of aggravated assault, and one count each of criminal attempt to commit armed robbery, entering an automobile, and possession of controlled substances.
Williams remains under investigation as authorities continue to piece together the events leading up to the shooting.
This incident underscores the importance of situational awareness and preparedness for those working in potentially vulnerable positions, such as road construction. When faced with a violent attack, having the means and ability to defend oneself can be crucial. However, it is equally important to be aware of local laws regarding the use of force and to ensure that any actions taken are in legal self-defense
