Beretta USA has delivered over 600,000 M9 pistols to the US military since the mid-1980s. There are another 100,000 M9s on order, but a new model, the M9A3 has been developed, in part, in response to the Modular Handgun System program for the Department of Defense. The MHS calls for a modular pistol that is more effective, accurate, and reliable than the current model M9, incorporate accessory rails, and be suppressor-ready.
