HOUSTON, TX — A robbery attempt turned fatal early Sunday morning when a food delivery driver was forced to defend himself against an armed assailant at 3322 Yellowstone Boulevard. The incident, which occurred at approximately 12:25 a.m. on May 12, 2024, will be reviewed by a Harris County grand jury.

The deceased suspect’s identity has yet to be confirmed by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences. The delivery driver, who was unharmed during the confrontation, cooperated fully with law enforcement, remaining at the scene to provide a statement.

According to HPD Homicide Division Sergeant M. Holbrook and Detective R. Lujan, the driver was making a delivery when confronted by a male suspect who brandished a firearm and demanded cash. In response to the imminent threat, the driver, who was armed, shot the assailant in self-defense.

The Harris County District Attorney’s Office has been notified, and the case is set to be presented to a grand jury to determine the appropriateness of the shooting under Texas self-defense laws.

Investigators are currently searching for a second suspect involved in the robbery, described as a black male wearing a white hoodie, who fled the scene with the delivery driver’s backpack.

This tragic incident highlights the risks faced by delivery drivers, underscoring the dangers of the profession. In response to such threats, many drivers are choosing to carry firearms for personal protection. This case serves as a poignant example of why many delivery personnel feel the need to be armed while on the job.

In a report by KHOU , the brother of the deceased suspect has raised questions about the circumstances surrounding the shooting. “They say he was the pizza delivery guy, but we don’t have a receipt that he was buying a pizza,” he commented, questioning why the delivery driver was armed.

Why was he armed??? Most likely to stop people from robbing him, which seems to be exactly what happened here.

The community and local authorities are urged to provide any information regarding the identity of the second suspect by contacting the HPD Homicide Division or Crime Stoppers. This case brings to light the ongoing debate over the rights of individuals to protect themselves while performing their jobs in potentially hazardous circumstances.
