PHILADELPHIA, PA – Philadelphia police are currently investigating a double shooting incident that occurred outside an auto shop in Southwest Philadelphia, leaving a 12-year-old boy and a 43-year-old man injured. The event took place just before 4 p.m. on Tuesday.

According to reports, the 12-year-old sustained a minor graze wound to the head, while the 43-year-old man, identified as a mechanic working at the shop, suffered a gunshot wound to his back. Surveillance footage captured the moment a gunman initiated the attack in the vicinity, prompting an immediate response from another individual on the scene.

The father of the injured boy, who fired back at the shooter, explained his actions to Action News , stating that he was compelled to protect his son amid the gunfire. “From out of nowhere, I hear like 10 to 15, 20 gunshots from the back, you know? And we all ran inside the shop and that’s when I started discharging my weapon too,” he recounted.

Local residents described the chaos of the situation, with one noting the distinct sound of the gunshots: “First it was ‘Pow! Pow! Pow!’ Then it stopped, then ‘Pow! Pow! Pow!’ again.”

The mechanic, who police believe was the intended target of the attack, is currently receiving medical care and is in critical but stable condition. It appears the young boy was an unintended victim, caught in the crossfire of the violent altercation.

The boy’s father shared the terrifying moment he realized his son was injured: “I came outside looking for him, he came from the left side of the shop. I see the blood on his face and everywhere on his body.” Driven by the sight of his wounded child, the father returned fire before rushing his son to the hospital. The child has been treated and released, but the incident has left the family deeply shaken.

“I’m so hurt right now. I don’t know how I’m going to heal from this, I’m still traumatized right now,” the father expressed, urging others to empathize with the situation. “Just put yourself in my shoes. Like you feel me? If somebody is shooting and killing your child, how are you going to feel?”

As of now, no arrests have been made, although a weapon was recovered at the scene. Authorities are continuing their search for the initial shooter and are calling on anyone with information about the incident to come forward.

This incident highlights the unpredictable nature of violence in public spaces and the instinctual actions taken by individuals in defense of their loved ones. And this is exactly why we carry.
