Maybe it’s a Boomer thing, but I remember the first time I saw the word “programmable.” It described the relationship between the television and a VCR—a video cassette recorder—or not the relationship per se as much as the options available. As a VCR owner, I could walk to the local Blockbuster store and rent movies like Casablanca or Jaws and watch them at home, even rewind them and watch again. The movies were imprinted on a tape inside the video cassette and…well, it seemed amazing, but I suppose it’s ancient history and boring to the Millennial generation.
