Maybe it’s a Boomer thing, but I remember the first time I saw the word “programmable.” It described the relationship between the television and a VCR—a video cassette recorder—or not the relationship per se as much as the options available. As a VCR owner, I could walk to the local Blockbuster store and rent movies like Casablanca or Jaws and watch them at home, even rewind them and watch again.
